Hi and welcome to you all, for another short narrative in which we will explore the history of the iconic Macy's Department Store. Paying particular attention to its historical heritage, and its brave decision to include online shopping to the savvy American consumers who are, like most people worldwide, switching over to online shopping in their droves.
However, first just a couple of words about our sponsors "bargainBrute.com," who has also become one of America's online retail shopping outlet favorites in much less time than Macy's. Why is this, as just like Macy's was when they first started out were and still is an American run retail online business, who overtime have not changed their belief in real family virtues, something which shines through when you ever speak to any of their team members when contacting their legendary friendly customer service agents.
Authors note: Bottom line if you want a real quality bargain then BargainBrute will source it, and deliver it to your home directly from one of the 97 warehouses they have built around the American mainland. Pop over and give them a try and find out why Americans have made them their favorite place to shop online.
OK, on with our story.
Gone are the days when a sizeable traditional brick and mortar department store could just sit on their laurels and await the American "Bargain City Shopper" to come to them and spend their hard-earned cash without really attempting to reward them in any way. Although it has to be said the annual Macy's parade held every year in Manhattan on "Thanksgiving Day" has, since its conception, signaled the start of the annual Christmas retail season and is rather fun to watch, but I am sorry even this is not quite enough.
However, and thankfully, the directorship of Macy's have at last realized that many Americans have switched to online shopping, and as a result, although their revenues were still relatively high when compared to other retail retailers, they had in fact dropped over the past few years, mainly due to the above switch to online shopping which Macy's were very slow to realize.
However, after much soul searching to entice the American "Bargain City Shopper" to spend with them, the time had come for change. Like most traditional brick and mortar retailers they too at last added online shopping into their portfolio.
Authors note: Do not think that Macy's were on their final legs before adding online shopping into their retail setup as in 2018 they still were regarded as the worlds largest department store, and in terms of actual retail sales they generated an annual revenue of over twenty billion dollars, so it is of no small wonder that back in 2017 they ranked it as the worlds leading retailers
OK, now that we have seen why Macy's added online retail to their setup. Let's look at the beginnings of the relationship between the "American Bargain City Shopper" and the Iconic department store, Macy's.
The Iconic Macy's owe their existence to "Rowland Hussey Macy," who opened four retail stores specializing in the selling of dry goods all of which opened up between 1843 – 1855. One of these would become for many years the iconic Macy flagship store in downtown Haverville, originally constructed to serve the large mill factory employees working there at the time. However, Macy apparently did not do his homework well enough, and they all failed, closing down in 1855.
However, our intrepid future retail magnette learnt from his mistakes and moved to New York quickly after, in 1958. He named his new enterprise "R. H. Macy & Co," and situated it on the now-famous Sixth Avenue between 13th and 14th street.
Other business leaders of the time laughed at where Macy had located his dry goods outlet as all other dry goods retail outlets were more than two miles away, but he persevered even though his first daily takings were dismal, amounting to just $11.08 approximately just under $350.00 in today's money.
However, being an incurable romantic, he took solace in remembering his old sailing days when he was a boy serving on a whaling ship just off the Nantucket coastline. He had apparently never forgotten his friends, and after getting together with them one night, they decided to reopen the store using the tattoo he had done on his forearm of a star while serving on the "Emilily Morgan," the whaler he worked on as the shop's logo.
Authors note: Macy, after this meeting with his old friends, had a grand reopening just a few weeks later. An opening geared around the star log, the opening was a grand success, and the star was to remain as the Macy's logo up until today.
After this grand opening, there was nothing to stop Macy. He began to snap up buildings either side of him as they became available, which overtime allowed him to connect all the buildings together. In time, also allowed him to open up more departments within the now-massive store and sell multitudes of stock, including clothing fashions, hardware, in fact, you name it, he sold it. However, he did not forget his roots and even today, although management has changed often, there is a special department set aside for the sale of "Dry-Goods".
