However, it will make your carpets smell better and at the same time, stop your pets from damaging your carpets. Remember, as with all caustic materiels you should keep them well away from your clothing and wear goggles while using them.
There are numerous ways to clean up stains simply by using products already available in your home, such as vinegar, lemon juice, detergents, rubbing alcohol, etc. I have included within this short How To article a few tips which will allow you to get rid of most pet and common stains.
Pet stains: Use one teaspoon of household ammonia to a half-cup of cold water. Place the finished mixture into an old spray bottle and simply apply it to the carpet. It is essential not to wet the backing of the rug. After you have covered the whole stain use paper-towels and blot the area until dry to the touch, then leave and let dry completely. (about an hour)
For something slightly more reliable, mix together a detergent solution made up of bleachless and lanolin-free hand or dish soap, make it by simply mixing one-quarter of a teaspoon of bleachless and lanolin-free hand or dish soap with a quart of water, pour the finished product into an old spray bottle and clean using the same method as above.
For best results, however, you can use a steam cleaner with just water; This will re-hydrate the stain making its removal much more straightforward, once finished leave to dry completely.
Warning: If you use this method, you must ensure you do not wet the underside of the carpet, this can lead to your carpet rotting, and will also leave a smell of damp within your home.
Ink stains: Rubbing alcohol is the best product for this, just pour a liberal quantity of the alcohol onto a clean white rag or paper towel and lightly blot the stain until the stain disappears. Be very careful to always blot in the same direction as this will ensure that the pile of the carpet does not fall flat. If you do make this mistake, you will always see where the stain was whenever the sun shines on it.
Beer and Wine: Mix one part vinegar and one part water and once again place the solution into an old spray bottle and then saturate the stain thoroughly, let stand for about fifteen minutes and then, using a sponge clean the stain in a circular rubbing motion.
Once satisfied that you have got most of the stain out rinse the whole area with warm water, then brush the pile back into its natural direction. Once this stage is complete, spread layers of white towels or paper across the stain, then use something heavy to lay on top of the sheets. Leave in place until the carpet is completely dry then remove, hopefully, the stain will have disappeared.
There are many other sorts of carpet stains, too many to be included in this very short How-To narrative; luckily, however, most can be removed using the above solutions and procedures, some better than others, just be careful when you are mixing the solutions and of course, as with all cleaning solutions keep them well away from children.
